At the time of his death in 1893, Flavel had a net worth of nearly US$2 million (equivalent to $67,822,222 in 2023). Captain George Edward Flavel (/fləˈvɛl/;[1] November 17, 1823 — July 3, 1893) was an Irish American maritime pilot and entrepreneur. Born in 1823 to Irish parents, Flavel relocated to the West coast of the United States in 1849, working as a tugboat operator between Sacramento and San Francisco, California.

The house shares a full city block with a carriage house, which housed buggies, a carriage, sleigh, stables and upstairs, a hayloft. You can see a video showing the history of the Flavel House, browse in the gift shop and memorabilia museum. The Carriage House was built on the southwest corner of the property in 1887. It served as the place where the family kept their carriage, sleigh, and small buggies. It also had three temporary holding stalls for their horses, a tack room, and a hayloft upstairs. In the mid-1890s, the Carriage House was home to the family’s hired caretaker, Alex Murray.

Heritage Museum
The general rule is “if it is painted, it is plaster.” The ceiling medallions, cove molding and decorative interior arches are ornamental plaster. They feature contrasting, delicate white detailing, like other Victorian household items. A flower basket decal marks the center of each chair back, a popular Victorian furniture ornament intended to make a plain object more decorative. In the dining room, a six-light chandelier is original to the house. It was a gas light fixture, or gasolier, and has since been electrified and restored.

The stunning Flavel House in Astoria offers a glimpse into this coastal Oregon town’s past. From ghost sightings to items moving around to an inoperable music box playing at random, locals know that “friendly” ghosts reside at this historic home. The Astoria of the mid to late-nineteenth century was a frontier seaport and a land of contrasts and contradictions. Vice & Virtue explores early tensions through historic photos, artifacts from the era, and a recreated saloon. The Flavel House has six fireplaces, each unique with decorative tiles, ornate hand- carved mantels, and a patterned firebox designed for burning coal. Master craftsmanship was used on the wooden mantels and throughout the mansion.
Timeline
Flavel married Mary Christine Boelling in 1854, and later expanded his business interests, which included the construction of the Occident Hotel (1869). In 1884, Flavel commissioned German-born architect Carl Leick to design a large residence for his family on a full city block at Eighth and Duane streets. Leick relocated from San Francisco for the commission, which he completed in 1888.

Eventually, the County transferred full ownership of the property to the Historical Society. By 1887, Flavel had sold his bar piloting operation and largely retired from commercial activities. His descendants continued to live in the house until 1933, when Flavel’s grandniece, Patricia Jean Flavel, donated the mansion to the city of Astoria. Though the city used it for occasional meetings, it was later turned over to Clatsop County, which housed various agencies at the mansion from the late 1930s to early 1940s. The Clatsop County Historical Society assumed ownership in 1951 and operated the mansion as a historical museum. During the 1990s, the Society restored the mansion to its appearance during George and Mary Flavel’s occupancy.
The 11,600-square-foot mansion has an essentially square plan with a central hall. On the main floor, this hall separates the music room and dining room on one side and the stair hall, library, and parlor on the other; a kitchen wing extends from the dining room side. On the parlor’s exterior corner is an octagonal tower that rises three stories to a tall, pointed, eight-sided roof. The commanding corner tower plus the wraparound porch are hallmarks of the Queen Anne style, though individual exterior details draw from the Eastlake, Stick, and even Italianate styles; the latter seen in the prominent eave bracketing.
Housed in a historic Neo-Classical structure, the museum has six permanent exhibits. These exhibits are complemented by an ever-changing array of temporary and traveling exhibits. Flavel’s skillful tenacity and fearlessness, coupled with his shrewd business sense, soon gave him a virtual monopoly on piloting services across the Columbia bar. These dangers were later mitigated by twentieth-century dams and the continuous dredging and clearing of the shipping channel, but prior to that, the role of river pilot was a critical, and prosperous, career for men like Flavel. One of Oregon’s most striking mansions is that of George Flavel in Astoria.
The parlor, library, music and dining rooms are restored with antiques from the late Victorian era. Situated in the main hall, this speaking tube once served as an early intercom system. Tall front doors welcome visitors to the historic Flavel House Museum. City Hall relocated in the late 1930s, and in 1941 the United Service Organization (USO) took control of the structure. The USO initially used the building as a much-needed dormitory for workers flooding into the area filling the jobs created by the World War II industrial boom. Once the need for housing eased, the USO converted the building into a leisure space for off-duty service members from the nearby naval base and hospital.
